With five children and three grandchildren, JoAnn and Geaton DeCesaris, Jr., president of K. Hovnanian Land Investment Group, welcome family and friends to view the latest movies and sporting events in their Italian-style home theatre. DiCrescenzo Design Studio came up with concepts that the DeCesaris family incorporated, such as a procession of archways and stairs leading down to the European stage with two rows of purple La-Z-Boy recliners with integrated cup holders and a single back row of gold chairs for a total of 18 seats. Walls of lighted niches where landscape scenes will soon be placed, columns gracing each corner, and purple and gold patterned carpeting fit the theme, while the oversized floor tiles just inside the doors to the “Teatro” finish the snack bar area, which is equipped with a beverage refrigerator and a full-service candy cupboard.

Cleverly tucked within the lattice-trimmed ceiling, a Runco VX-5000ci DLP projector with processor fills the Stewart 110-inch deluxe screen with images, while the Triad Gold surround speakers and power subwoofers and the Halo C1 home theatre controller and 250 watt amplifiers bounce sounds within the space. “We use the theatre a lot,” says JoAnn DeCesaris.

As a key part of the original design of the one-year-old custom estate nestled on hundreds of acres, the home theatre just touches on the whole house automation and audio video equipment installed by Eric Davidson, president of American Automation & Communications Inc. in Bowie. With 12 televisions throughout the home, controls are vital elements of this wired space. Add three Creston 12-inch video touch screens, including one in the owners’ suite and one in the kitchen, and four 5-inch versions, plus the remotes scattered about the house and the whole house automation kicks into full gear. Additional Creston products include security and lighting control systems and closed circuit cameras, while Home Automation Inc. incorporated the temperature controls.

But the main focus of the wired estate is the home theatre with its Escient DVD jukebox and antique bar at the arched entry, its location near the billiards room and wine cellar, and its colorful decor. The idea is to balance acoustics with aesthetics, says Davidson. Mission accomplished.
