Clean and Crisp
Classic Virginia is the theme of the Courtland Home’s Alderman model at Pickett’s Reserve in the heart of Fairfax. “What we wanted to do was pay the same attention to detail in interior design as Courtland Homes does in finish work,” says Phyllis Ryan, vice president of marketing for Interior Concepts Inc. “We were very careful about keeping the custom feel to it” and adding a modern edge to a traditional design for the “very sophisticated, tuned-in market” that is purchasing the 88 new single-family homes located in the City of Fairfax.
As open as the kitchen is, it’s intimate, Ryan says. The creamy-colored, antique-look cabinets and contrasting black granite counters show two of the popular finishes in today’s kitchen designs. Variations in cabinet heights create a rhythm to the space. Recessed lighting and Murray Feiss Neo-Classic Collection pendants shine on the stainless steel appliances in the cooking area, which melds into a breakfast room with glass door access to the full-length rear deck.
Senior Designer Erin Olexia wanted to keep the kitchen and adjoining rooms “clean and crisp and fresh” by adding elements of nature and time, such as the Home Art placemats lining the breakfast table and the vintage railroad clocks by Interlude hanging along the wall to the rear staircase. Hardwood flooring is standard in this area of the home as well as the foyer and hallway.
Tone on Tone
With warm wood finishes and wall colors, such as Sherwin-Williams Jersey Cream, used throughout the upper levels, the designers chose to create a soft monochromatic look on the lower level by incorporating different tones of green into the color scheme. Olexia brought in a Bassett sofa in Lime fabric matched with Sam Moore Beige chairs and a Lazar, Artek Celadon-colored ottoman finished in Robert Allen’s Sensuede pattern. An ottoman serves two purposes, says Ryan, as an extra seat and a resting place for the feet.
A marble cocktail table from Hammary’s Catalina Group grounds the room and leads the eye to matching end tables and vintage-style buffet by Braxton Culler. Kenfair wood blinds with a strip of green keep the warm hues going strong in this comfy lower level.
Adding Options and Details
Courtland Homes offers a bevy of outstanding options to its home buyers as shown in the model with its lower level spa bathroom in iridescent tiles and its sauna in the meditation room.
The Alderman comes with more than 3,400 square feet of space on the first and second floors with the finished lower level and loft adding more places to gather. Other options on this level include an office or fifth bedroom and media or exercise room.
The Plan of the Land
Landing planning was key at the City of Fairfax’s Pickett’s Reserve community where Courtland Homes offers five floor plans with four to six exterior elevations. House types and exteriors are preselected on the 88 homesites to ensure variety and to establish a custom look to the neighborhood, says Linda French, sales manager.
The builder believes in using natural materials, such as stone, French adds, and plants an abundance of landscaping while preserving existing trees. Fifteen acres of parkland surround Pickett’s Reserve where the roads follow the curves of the land and two brick entrances introduce this upscale community.
