Welcome to Spaces

Written by Trish Donnally

Washington Spaces reflects the art of living and living with art throughout this issue. We hope to inspire you with stories about how area residents are enhancing their homes with fine architecture, sculptures, paintings, emerging art, and treasures they’ve collected from around the world.

Sheila Johnson invites us to spectacular Salamander Farm near Middleburg, VA, where beautifully landscaped grounds complement the Thomas Pheasant-designed interiors of her magnificent stone house. Terry Gerace Jr. unveils Artists Inn Residence, one of the most creative bed and breakfast establishments to open in our region. Chip and Betsy Barclay reveal the liberating secret of divesting belongings to live in a Zen sanctuary-like space where the art arises as much from what is not there as from what is.

Simple or profound, an e-Bay find or a museum-quality piece, living with art enriches all of us. It gives each of us a chance to express our thoughts, dreams, and personalities in the unique living spaces we call home. We’re greatly inspired by the exciting spaces we’re finding around Washington, DC, and hope you will be, too.

Have a wonderful summer.
