An Artisanal Office from Hardwood Artisans

I just got some amazing pictures of a new home office Hardwood Artisans designed for a condo resident near DC’s Chinatown. If you are not already familiar with Hardwood Artisans, we wrote about them in a piece about local furniture makers in our winter issue.

This latest project is an illustration of the creative ways you can use a tiny space to meet all your needs. Take a look.

Here’s what the office looks like when you walk in the door. I love the custom shelving and cabinets. But what you don’t see are the many other elements that are still hiding.

One of the bulletin boards folds down into an additional desk.

And that ottoman under the larger desk? Check out the great storage it holds inside.

And now for the best trick – the Murphy bed that folds down from the wall. So this tiny office is now a guest room.

“Considering that so many people are unwilling to move or add on right now,” Marketing Director Alison Heath wrote, “I thought perhaps readers might be interested in, well, how NOT to add a room to your home.” Yes, indeed.

If you want to take a closer look at Hardwood Artisans, go to its third annual lemonade social on June 27, where you can tour the workshop and purchase several marked-down items. I’ll have more information on that in the coming weeks.

I am the proud owner of this beautiful den. I love it and use it every day!! The den really functions as both a spacious office and a cozy guest room–I swear it doubled in size with this installation. The guest drawers to the left of the double bed (coupled with the closet) make the room comfortable for 2 guests. The office is definitely the most zen space I’ve ever had to work in. There are even wood pieces that hide the cords, keeping the space very clean. There is a beautiful display cabinet to the left of the bed that makes my mineral collection absolutely sparkle. The barrister cabinets along the top hold an amazing amount of stuff. I had a lot of ideas as to what exactly I wanted and Hardwood artisans made it happen. They were great to work with and really made an effort to make every detail perfect. My condo was recently on the Mount Vernon Triangle home tour and I got a lot of amazing feeback on my condo–and on the den in particular. A neighbor of mine with the same condo design(the “Clement” unit in City Vista http://www.cityvistadc.com/floorplan_pdfs/clement.pdf) loved the den so much that she is having a very similar design installed, but is replacing the unit on the left with bookshelves to have even more storage. Anyway, thanks for featuring my beautiful den on your blog. I really love my condo and the den is the perfect addition and finishing touch.

Annie, thanks for writing in! What a treat to have the owner describe the project in her own words. It’s such a great illustration of Hardwood Artisans’ work.
