Eric Henderson's Kodak Brownie

I met Eric Henderson last weekend at the Aspen Institute’s Socrates Society, and while the rest of us were snapping pictures of each other with our digital cameras, he was using a 1950 Brownie Hawkeye camera. And by the looks of his work, there’s something to be said for the low-tech method.

Louvre Rain and Shine

By day, Henderson is the communications director for Living Cities, a collaborative of 21 of the world’s largest foundations and financial institutions. But he’s developed a side business as a fine art photographer, and he’s been commissioned by the likes of the World Bank and Starbucks Corp. You can browse his work right here.

Sic: Ultra Boom was shot in DC.

Henderson’s job with Living Cities takes him to DC every week, but most of his photography is concentrated in New York. Here are some of my favorites.

InyC. Do you ever look at people’s feet on the subway?

A Few Things Happened on the Upper East Side. Henderson likes to play a lot with the image of the crosswalk man, he says.

Strollin’ Harlem. Crosswalk man makes another appearance.

Machine…  My Sheen. I’m usually not into motorcycles, but…

Change on Hamilton Terrace (Harlem, NYC, Nov. 4, 2008) The streetlights look like sunshine here.

Drearshine. Perfect title.

To think, all this from a little old Brownie picked up for $5 at a street stand in Harlem. Anyone know of any other great black and white photography?

Flawless! Definitely a photographer you need to keep your eye on. This guy has a lot of Important people talking about him. Better buy now before you can’t afford to.
